The initials announced in coded form the arrival of a new movement in British art. Hunt was put out by the event and suspected DGR of wanting to steal a march on their work. But the truth is probably otherwise. DGR was quite nervous about the reception of his picture and may well have feared that the Academy wouldn't have accepted his painting. Attached to the picture was a gold-faced sheet of paper containing two sonnets on the painting.

All kneel to adore the infant Christ, who in turn raises his hand to bless them. They are crowded in a grotto overhung with rocks and dense with vegetation. The painting was part of a large, elaborate altarpiece made for the church of San Francesco Grande, Milan to celebrate the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary. It replaced a similar picture Leonardo made earlier now in the Louvre, Paris. Leonardo has used innovative painting techniques to give the impression that the figures are emerging from the darkness of this shaded setting. For example, he has blurred the edges of their forms to indicate the shadows that envelop them.
Correggio Antonio Allegri Italian, — Correggio spent most of his brief career in the northern Italian city of Parma. Removed from the great centers of Renaissance art, he was able to create a remarkably innovative body of work.
These images are central icons for both the Catholic and Orthodox churches. The Madonna and Child type is very prevalent in Christian iconography, divided into many traditional subtypes especially in Eastern Orthodox iconography , often known after the location of a notable icon of the type, such as the Theotokos of Vladimir , Agiosoritissa , Blachernitissa , etc. The term Madonna in the sense of "picture or statue of the Virgin Mary" enters English usage in the 17th century, primarily in reference to works of the Italian Renaissance. In an Eastern Orthodox context, such images are typically known as Theotokos. Other types of Marian imagery have a narrative context, depicting scenes from the Life of the Virgin , e.
